In response to the recent termination of our USAID grants, GAIA is launching an urgent campaign to sustain our life-saving programs. The sudden $1.8 million cut in our fully obligated funding endangers roughly ⅓ of our program budget, placing hundreds of nursing scholars, tens of thousands of mobile clinic clients, and the livelihoods of our beloved GAIA Malawi staff at risk.

We are calling on our most stalwart supporters to encourage donations above-and-beyond annual giving to raise the $1.8 million we have lost. Though a daunting goal, we have inspiring momentum as a group of donors has already committed nearly $900,000 to the effort!  In addition, an anonymous donor has pledged $150K to match the gifts received in the next two weeks to ensure that we make payroll, purchase emergency medical supplies, pay spring semester tuition, and demonstrate ongoing commitment to our Malawian friends. Over the next 3 months, we will seek to secure commitments for the remaining funds (payable in 2025 and 2026).

The recent Supreme Court decision to “reinstate foreign aid” pertained only to work already completed, and unfortunately the decision has no bearing on agreements like ours to fund activities in 2025 and beyond. With USAID  being summarily eliminated – endangering remarkable progress on HIV, malaria, and other public health crises – Malawi cannot afford for GAIA to be ⅓ less impactful. As always, our highly cost-effective programs are fueled by your generosity. We hope that the progress we’ve made together over the past 25 years inspires you to double down on your investment at this critical time.
